Even though all the music you've ever done has been using something like a .... DAW ? |
My name is William and I’m a producer, guitarist and music educator based in Miami, Florida.
You’ll have to memorize stuff, you’ll find it a bit confusing and there’s gonna be many whys which answers will defog themselves only gradually. Unfortunately, there’s no truth behind claims like “Master Music Theory in a matter of weeks ! “ like some online courses promote. If those claims were true the courses would've gone viral ! Exaggeration is not a commendable marketing strategy because most people know that everything worth achieving and possesses long lasting value can't be acquired "In a matter of weeks". Or may be it is true, how many weeks ? :) Now the even better news: Music Theory actually comes to an end ! Meaning, you’ll reach a stage where you WILL know ALL there is to know about it ! And luckily, the learning curve always speeds up exponentially - the more you know the faster you’ll learn ! At some point you’ll feel such a power, such confidence in your own capabilities, that you’ll be able to make decisions on the fly, speedily achieving pretty much anything you can conceive !
When you start a course on music theory you’re always introduced to the standard staff notation as a way of presenting the music visually. Ideally you would benefit a great deal from reading & writing using only this system but as we’ll see below, it contains intrinsic flaws that can’t handle the need to visually represent many elements of electronic music.
• You want to just, do it yourself !
• You aim for the Film scoring / Hollywood type composer.
• You wanna become a jazz composer with deep understanding of contemporary music theory - able to compose in Quartal or Quintal harmonies and write melodies or improvise over such a challenging language. I highly recommend you attending University of Miami which has among his graduates All Time Masters of the caliber of Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius. Still have doubts or questions ? |
